Dr. Vassily Hatzimanikatis is currently Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Vassily received his Diploma in Chemical Engineering from the University of Patras, in Greece, and his MS and PhD in Chemical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology. After the completion of his doctoral studies, he held a research group leader position at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland.  Prior to joining EPFL, Vassily worked for three years in DuPont, Cargill, and Cargill Dow, on the development of biocatalysts for the production of industrial chemicals, and for six years as an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

Vassily’s research interests are in the areas of systems biotechnology, metabolic engineering, bioinformatics, and complexity of biological systems.  He is senior editor for the journal Biotechnology Journal, and associate editor of the journals Biotechnology and Bioengineering, and Metabolic Engineering. He has published over 70 technical articles and he is co-inventor in thee patents.

Vassily received the 2014 Metabolic Engineering Award from the International Society of Metabolic Engineering (IMES) and the 2011 Gaden Award of the ACS Biochemical Technology Division. In 2009 he was elected fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. While at Northwestern University Vassily received the Teacher of the Year Award from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences in 2004. In 2002 he received the Jay Bailey Young Investigator Best Paper Award in Metabolic Engineering and in 2001 he received the DuPont Young Professor award (2001-2004).
